Bern Bears

The deal was, Nate did his homework at school (he has 45 mins between his dismissal and the secondary school dismissal before they ride the tram home together) and then we could visit the Bear Pits instead of doing the homework at home.  He did it so we went for a ride.
Nate standing in front of the bear pit (Bern was named by Berchtold V, Duke of Zahringen in the 12th century for the first animal he killed here--a bear).  The city uses the bear as its mascot and keeps live ones on the bank of the river.  This bear pit is much larger than the actual pits that were used for many years at the top of the hill.  They now have wood carved bears in the pits and they seem rather happy.
Nate said these guys were chewing on some kind of bone.  They seemed rather happy, too.
This is the view from the bear pit, across the Aare River and the Nydeggbrucke (bridge).
This is from the same point just to the left of the above.  The steeple under renovation on the left is part of the Munster Cathedral.   Building started in 1421 and only took 180 years to finish.
Nate happily biking to town.  The other boys stayed home to do homework and Erin was at volleyball practice.
Nate got thirsty with all that biking so he stopped at one of the many fountains in the Old City from which you can drink clear, fresh spring water.  Just don't dip into the trough--for many reasons.
