Getting Settled

The first week of school culminated with a school BBQ right after school on Friday. Kent is displaying the decorations in all their grandeur.
Michelle (far right) is our host, has been showing us around and given us a mighty welcome. She has a son Ryan's age and a daughter, Zoe on the far left. We parked at the front of the line so as soon as the vegi burgers came off the grill, we had first dibs. Sort of odd, but the line was really for the hamburgers, they had stacks of vegi burgers waiting for takers.
Sunday dinner was enjoyed in our garden house. Funny story--we went shopping Saturday afternoon after dropping Erin off at the stake center by the Bern Temple for her Seminary Kick Off meeting. We needed electrical light fixtures for when we had installers coming on Tuesday this week and we needed to do a big grocery run. We drove into "Shoppyland" (yes, that is what it's called) at 4:55 against droves of people leaving. We asked a gentleman about the parking meters and he said don't bother, they close in 5 minutes. So we drove the 20 minutes home to shop nearer the home only to learn all the stores close at 5pm on Saturdays. So Kent and I got a few essentials at the little market in the train station because it stays open until 8pm:) Long story to explain why our Sunday dinner was a mish mash of whatever I could find in the sparse kitchen.
After dinner we enjoyed some fussball matches and then some slept, some read. (Another side note about Erin's seminary meeting the night before: the meeting started at 4:30, then they fed the youth dinner followed by a dance. Erin called at 7pm to ask if we could pick her up by 8, she didn't really think she wanted to stay for the dance and, anyway, she was tired. Half an hour later she called to say, "never mind, the kids actually dance here and could you get me at 9:30 or 10, I'm not really that tired." She explained later that all the kids dance the fox trot and they ALL dance, she had a blast!)
This is our apartment--top 2 floors. They are currently in the process of redoing the roof. It is rather an extensive project and quite messy with the wood they are cutting to make the under frame for the tiles and then the thick layers of hay? thatch? something that will then be covered by the tiles. I think they put back on the previous tiles so it won't even look new when they are finished. They were hoping to have it finished before we arrived but they had lots of rain this spring so it kept prolonging the project. It'll be nice when they finish and I don't have men looking in my 3rd floor windows (2nd here since the 1st floor is the ground floor). It'll also be nice to walk straight up to the house and not have a huge crane in the front entrance, although it has made it easier to find our place from afar:)
Trash is another interesting story. It is picked up Mondays and Wednesdays in my area. The blue bags are 35L bags that are quite expensive but you are paying for the bag and the trash service. You can use as many as you want, but you pay for what you use. On our street of similar apartments there are about 2-3 bags/house. So, for the 4 families that live in our building there were only 3 bags this morning.
Other buildings like ours had only 1 bag in front (up on the wall to keep the cats out or many had laundry baskets over top of them). There are recycling centers all around for the normal stuff: plastics, bottles, cardboard, paper, etc. and you can pay to dispose of larger items at the recycling centers. They definitely have less waste then I am use to seeing.
I started German classes today. Tschuss!

It has been fun keeping up with the Craguns. Sorry I missed you when you were here.
