It rained all day, which only seems fitting for a visit to a former concentration camp. It actually slowed a bit while we walked around the grounds.
The words on the gate above Kent's head are "Arbeit Macht Frei" which means "work makes free." Not sure why they used that phrase but it was placed over several gates to concentration camps. Inmates considered it a mockery.
This is a view from the crematorium entrance along the electric fence with a small mote between the grounds and the fence.
Bunk beds in the bunkers. They were originally made for 200 in each but eventually had 2000 inmates in each bunker (10 to one bunk).
These are the roll call grounds were inmates were often made to stand for hours on end in all types of weather.
Memorial in front of the main hall of Dachau.
I would have had a hard time to not just raze the entire place but it is worth it to those who suffered there that we never forget what happened. I had a huge pit in my stomach throughout the visit--can't fathom how this could happen or how it continues to happen in our world.
