The kids were out of school for most of the week so Thursday we drove up to Quinault in Olympic National Park. There are the oldest, biggest cedar trees in the area--not as big as the redwoods but interesting in their own right. This is Kent and Dan at the largest Red Cedar. Being in a rainforest it rained the entire day; we still hiked but some got wetter than others. Kent was the lucky dry one with his new birthday coat.

The next day we actually had blue skies. We went to Ruby Beach along the Washington Coast. We enjoyed the rocks and logs and sunshine.
The kids were so busy playing on their outpost (the rock behind was their fortress) that they didn't notice the sea had consumed them.
From the coast we drove to Hoh Rain Forest in Olympic. With the blue skies we actually caught a glimpse of Mount Olympus on our drive in. With 12-15 feet of annual rainfall, this was one lucky day! Below is a nurse log which was common to see. New trees grow along felled logs because they provide such rich nutrients for new growth.
We played along the Hoh River for hours. The kids and Dan threw so many rocks to the other side (most of them skipping) that I figure they must bring up volunteers to stand on the other side and throw them all back:)
The last day it rained again. Dan and I managed a quick hike in the morning before the rains started and before the kids awoke. We, the entire family, drove home in the rain in time for Erik and Erin's last soccer game.
